Overview

Some noise and vibration at shutdown is considered normal on the HW110S — it is caused by the motor's centrifugal switch re-engaging as the motor slows down. However, in many cases this noise can be significantly reduced or eliminated by increasing the drive belt tension. This article explains the cause, when to check the belt, and what to do if the noise persists.

Safety — Checking & Adjusting Belt Tension
+
Disconnect the saw from power before opening the cabinet or adjusting the belt. Never work on the belt or motor with the machine connected to a power source.
+
Never place hands or fingers near the belt or pulleys while the machine is running. When testing after adjustment, keep all body parts clear of rotating components to prevent pinching or serious injury.
+
Do not overtighten the belt. Excessive tension puts unnecessary load on the motor and arbor bearings and can cause premature wear or failure.
+
Wear safety glasses when working inside the cabinet — debris or a snapping belt can cause eye injury.
Why the Noise Happens — Centrifugal Switch

The motor's centrifugal switch activates twice during each use cycle:

Startup: Disengages — usually produces a faint click or pop.
Shutdown: Re-engages while the motor is still rotating — this can produce a louder, scraping-like sound, especially if the belt is loose and allows excess vibration.
When to Check Belt Tension
Clunk noise or vibration only at shutdown
Belt squealing or screeching at startup
Motor bogging down during cuts
General loss of cutting power
What If the Noise Persists?
Normal — Noise Only at Shutdown

If the noise occurs only at shutdown and does not affect cutting performance, this is considered normal behavior for the HW110S, particularly given its higher horsepower motor. No action is required beyond belt tensioning if desired.

Investigate — Noise During Operation

If the noise occurs during operation or gets progressively louder while running, this could indicate a bearing issue or other internal motor problem. Please contact our support team for further diagnostics.

Warranty

The Alpha HW110S 4HP table saw is backed by a 2-year manufacturer's warranty from the date of purchase, covering defects in materials and workmanship.
