The Short Answer

Since the tailstock is self-ejecting, the knockout rod is not intended for use with the tailstock. It is primarily designed to remove accessories from the headstock spindle — such as the spur center or live center — as demonstrated in the manual diagrams below.

Tailstock — Self-Ejecting

The quill on the tailstock automatically ejects accessories when fully retracted. In most cases a knockout rod is simply not needed — the tailstock handles this on its own.

If You Still Prefer to Use a Rod on the Tailstock

A slightly smaller diameter rod may be used — though this is generally unnecessary given the self-ejecting design.

Morse Taper Extension — Short Accessories

If an accessory has a taper that is too short to self-eject when the tailstock is fully retracted, a Morse Taper #2 Female to Male Extension will increase the effective length of the accessory and allow it to eject normally from the tailstock.
