Riving Knife Removal — Troubleshooting
Overview

If you're experiencing difficulty removing or reinstalling the riving knife on your Harvey Alpha Series table saw, the issue is almost always caused by one of two things: the locking pin not being fully released, or an overtightened cap screw on the riving knife bracket. This article walks through both scenarios and how to resolve them.

Table Saw Safety
+
Ensure the saw is completely powered off and unplugged from power before removing or reinstalling the riving knife or adjusting any components near the blade area.
Common Causes
1 — Locking Pin Not Fully Released

The riving knife has a locking pin that must be fully disengaged before the knife can be removed. If the pin is not properly unlocked, the riving knife will remain locked in position regardless of how much force is applied.

2 — Overtightened Cap Screw on the Bracket

If the locking pin is fully released but the knife still won't budge, the cap screw on the riving knife bracket may be overtightened, applying too much clamping pressure on the knife slot.

Recommended Fix
1
Ensure the saw is completely powered off and unplugged.
2
Using an Allen wrench, slightly loosen the cap screw located in the center of the riving knife bracket by 1/4 to 1/2 turn — do not remove it completely.
3
Try removing and reinstalling the riving knife. Loosening the screw relieves clamping pressure on the bracket, making it easier to slide the knife in and out.
