Overview of the HP-8 Mini Block Plane
The HP-8 Mini Block Plane from Bridge City Tool Works is a precision tool designed for fine detail trimming, flush work, and controlled shallow cuts. Its hallmark is accuracy: the plane uses dual depth skids that can be adjusted in thousandths of an inch, allowing users to take whisper-thin shavings with confidence. Compact in size but highly capable, the HP-8 quickly became a favorite for woodworkers seeking precision in tasks where larger block planes can feel cumbersome.
The HP-8v2 represents the next generation of this tool. Based on feedback from professional and hobbyist users, it refines the ergonomics, improves blade adjustability, and introduces more user-friendly hardware. While both planes share the same cutting angle, materials, and overall length, subtle but important design changes distinguish version 2.
This article outlines the differences and similarities between the HP-8 and HP-8v2, and explains why the updated version exists.
Key Differences Between HP-8 and HP-8v2
1. Plane Body
HP-8: Straight, minimal body profile with a more angular shape.
HP-8v2: Same overall sole length (94 mm), but redesigned with a curvier, more ergonomic profile, making it more comfortable to hold and maneuver.
2. Iron (Blade)
HP-8:
Iron width: 26.7 mm (1-3/64")
Iron thickness: 2.5 mm (3/32")
Held in place by a locking knob pressing on an orange magnetic cap that sits on top of the iron.
Adjustment method:
Loosen the plane iron cap knob.
Rotate the combined feed/lateral adjustment knob (one turn = 0.07 mm / 0.003").
Adjust until the blade edge is flush with the sole face, then lock the cap knob.
Trial planing can be done in ½-turn increments until fine shavings are achieved.

HP-8v2:
Iron width: 25 mm (1")
Iron thickness: 2.5 mm (3/32")
Secured by a clamping foot with a rotating disk that applies pressure directly on the iron.
Adjustment method:
Insert blade from the rear, aligning the slot with the cylindrical pin and hole with the movable pin.
Rotate the locking disk to clamp.
A single adjustment knob controls both blade angle (±1.2° canting range) and cutting depth (0.07 mm per rotation).

Cutting angle (same for both):
Body bed angle: 12°
Iron bevel: 25° primary + 5° micro bevel
Effective cutting angle: 42°
Iron hardness: HRC 60–62
3. Depth Skids
HP-8: Skids are slightly longer, with different hole placement for the mounting slots. While the plane sole is the same 94 mm length as the HP-8v2, the skid length and mounting pattern are unique.
HP-8v2: Skids are shorter to better match the curvier body profile. Hole placement is redesigned, so skids are not cross-compatible with HP-8 skids.

4. Thumbscrews for Skid Adjustment
HP-8: Uses standard machine screws to secure skids.
Screw thread length: 12mm
Screw thread size: M4-0.7
HP-8v2: Upgraded to four knurled thumbscrews total (two per skid), allowing tool-free adjustments. Threading is M4-0.7, the same as HP-8, so thumbscrews are interchangeable.
Thumbscrew overall shaft length: 11mm
Thumbscrew thread length: 6mm
Thumbscrew thread size: M4-0.7

Dimensions
| Feature | HP-8 | HP-8v2 |
|---|---|---|
| Sole length | 94 mm (3-11/16") | 94 mm (3-11/16") |
| Sole width | 33 mm (1-19/64") | 35 mm (1-3/8") |
| Iron width | 26.7 mm (1-3/64") | 25 mm (1") |
| Iron thickness | 2.5 mm (3/32") | 2.5 mm (3/32") |
| Cutting angle | 42° (same for both) | 42° (same for both) |
| Depth skids | Longer, different slot hole placement | Shorter, redesigned hole placement |
Similarities Between HP-8 and HP-8v2
Purpose: Both are precision mini block planes designed for fine trimming and detailed work.
Materials: Both use aluminum bodies and skids, with high-hardness HRC 60–62 steel irons.
Adjustment precision: Both offer depth control at 0.07 mm per full rotation of the adjustment knob.
Concept: Both rely on dual skids for depth control.
Threading: Both use M4-0.7 screws for skid fasteners.
Related Models: HP-8X and Chopstick Masters
The HP-8X Celebration Edition and the HP-8 planes included with the CSMv1 and CSMv2 Chopstick Masters (Gen 1 and Gen 2) all share the same body design as the original HP-8, not the HP-8v2.
As a result, their depth skids are not cross-compatible with HP-8v2 skids.
HP-8X also differs in materials:
Body: stainless steel (instead of aluminum)
Skids: titanium
Finish: PVD coating (instead of anodized aluminum)
Functionally, these planes behave like the HP-8, but HP-8X offers a premium material set and finish as a commemorative edition.

Why There is a Version 2
The HP-8v2 was created in response to feedback from users who loved the precision of the original HP-8 but wanted refinements in ergonomics, ease of adjustment, and blade control. The updates include:
More comfortable body shape.
Narrower, slotted iron for canting adjustments.
Easier clamping system with a rotating disk and clamping foot.
Redesigned, shorter skids to match the body profile.
Knurled thumbscrews for quick, tool-free depth skid adjustments.
These refinements make the HP-8v2 more versatile and user-friendly while preserving the accuracy and build quality that made the original HP-8 so well-regarded.

Cross-Compatibility
Knurled thumbscrews: The only interchangeable part between HP-8 and HP-8v2.
Skids, irons, and bodies: Not cross-compatible due to differences in size, slot placement, and design.
HP-8X and Chopstick Master planes: Based on the original HP-8 design, not HP-8v2—so skids are not cross-compatible.
Conversion: It’s not possible to retrofit an HP-8, HP-8X, or CSM planes into an HP-8v2.
Summary
The HP-8 remains a highly capable, precision mini block plane designed for fine trimming and detail work. The HP-8v2 builds on this foundation with improved ergonomics, refined blade control, and easier adjustments. Meanwhile, the HP-8X Celebration Edition and the HP-8 models included with Chopstick Masters retain the original HP-8 design, though HP-8X distinguishes itself with stainless steel, titanium, and a PVD finish.
All versions reflect Bridge City Tool Works’ commitment to craftsmanship and continuous refinement. The choice comes down to whether you prefer the original’s straightforward design or the v2’s added comfort and user-friendly features.
